Panel interlock

Run your own panel off a generator, safely

An interlock is a plate on the panel. It keeps the generator breaker and the utility main from being on together.

  • Switch the utility main off

The plate won't let the generator breaker go on until you do.

  • Plug the generator into the inlet

The inlet outside takes a 30 or 50 amp cord from your generator.

  • Turn on the breakers you choose

One at a time, as the generator can carry them. Furnace first, then the pump.

Before we quote

Not every panel has a kit made for it

Interlock kits are made for particular panel brands and models. Older and unusual panels often have none. We look at the label inside your panel before we quote. If no kit fits, we say so and offer a transfer switch for the circuits you need instead. We won't fit a kit that isn't made for your panel.

What we check

  • The panel's make and model, from the label inside

  • Whether there's room for the generator breaker

  • The inlet outside, which this job always includes

The limits

What an interlock won't do

  • 01

It won't start more than the generator can carry

You choose the breakers. A big pump or a dryer can be more than a small generator can start.

  • 02

    It won't run itself

You switch the main off, start the generator and bring the breakers on. A standby system does that for you.

  • 03

    It won't fit every house

Some panels have no kit. Then it's a transfer switch, and we say so at the visit.

Interlock questions

Can I fit an interlock kit myself?

We don't recommend it. A panel is live where you'd be working, and a kit that isn't made for your panel can leave the plate working loosely. We install it and have it inspected.

Do I still need an inlet?

Yes. The inlet is the safe plug-in point outside. An interlock without one leaves you running a cord to a panel breaker.

Will it pass inspection?

The inspector decides. We pull the permit, book the inspection and fix anything the inspector asks for.

Send a photo of the label inside your panel

Open the door, not the cover, and take a photo straight on. We'll tell you if a kit is made for it.
