How pricing works

We don't post prices for a generator hookup, because the house decides them. Here is how we get to the number.

  • What decides the price

Two jobs that sound alike can differ a lot once we see the house. These move the number most.

    • How far the inlet sits from the panel

    • The make and age of your panel, and whether an interlock kit is made for it

    • A 30 amp or a 50 amp inlet, matched to your generator

    • A finished wall we have to fish through, or an open run we can mount on

    • For standby: the pad, and how far the electric and the gas have to go

  • What the estimate includes, and what it doesn't

The estimate is written. It lists the parts, the labor and the permit fees as separate lines.

    • Not in it: the generator itself, gas piping, trenching, tree work, drywall repair and paint

    • A line for anything we can't see until a wall is open, so it isn't a surprise later

  • What happens at the visit

Marilyn comes to the house. She opens the panel, looks at the outside wall where the inlet would go, and writes down what you want to run: furnace blower, well pump, freezer, lights. She asks to see the generator's label. The visit fee is told to you before we drive out, and it comes off the job if you book the work.

  • After hours

We don't answer overnight, and there are two of us. Calls during an outage are returned in the order they came in. Evening and weekend visits are by appointment, and any extra charge is on the written quote before we start. For fire, smoke or wires down, call 911 and your utility first.

  • When you get the number

In writing, before any work starts, as a set price for the job described. If a wall opens up something we couldn't see, we stop and tell you before we go on.

Before the visit

What helps us quote closer

Three photos make the visit shorter and the number closer. Take them in daylight.

  • The panel, with the door open and the label showing

  • The outside wall where the inlet might go, from a few steps back

  • The label on your generator

Price questions

Why no prices on the page?

A hookup in a one-story house with the panel on the outside wall is a different job from one in a farmhouse with a finished basement. The number comes after we see it.

Is the visit fee credited?

Yes, if you book the work. The fee is told to you before we drive out.

How do I pay?

A deposit when you book, and the balance when you've seen it run. The terms are on the written quote.

Do you finance?

No.
